The short version

  • A CR-V wheel bearing follows the Honda pattern. The front presses into the knuckle, and the rear bolts on.
  • All wheel drive changes the rear. On those cars a driveshaft runs through the rear hub, so it is a different part.
  • This page runs 1997 to 2019. The front past 2011 and the front wheel drive rear past 2016 sit past the catalogs checked here.
  • The circlip in the front knuckle is the step that costs the most time on an older car.

The CR-V is a Civic underneath in most of the ways that matter here, with one exception. Half of them drive all four wheels, and that changes the rear.

Establish drivetrain before pricing anything on a CR-V wheel bearing job.

What all wheel drive changes

A driven rear is not a coasting rear

On a front wheel drive CR-V the rear hub is a simple bolt on unit. Nothing passes through its middle.

On an all wheel drive car the rear carries a driveshaft. The hub, the bearing and the fasteners all differ as a result.

What drive type does to the repair is covered further in this page. Confirming which drivetrain sits under a given CR-V comes before confirming the year.

A badge alone does not settle it, since both drivetrains wore the same trim names across the years. Check the driveshaft at the rear axle directly if there is any doubt.

The front is a press job

Two press fits and a circlip

The bearing presses into the knuckle, and the hub presses through the middle of it. The knuckle comes off the car for this job.

A snap ring holds the bearing in. On an older car it corrodes into its groove and fights every attempt at removal.

The press procedure in general is on the press in page. Working the ring free before it is fully seized saves the most time.

A shop without a proper press can still do the job with the right adapters. Doing it with a hammer and a socket, without support, tends to end with a damaged knuckle.

Fitting direction

The encoder face points inward

Many of these bearings carry a magnetic encoder on one face, usually darker in color. The wheel speed sensor reads that face.

Press it in backwards and the ABS light comes on immediately, on a bearing that is otherwise perfect.

Correcting it means pressing the bearing back out. Orientation before the press goes in is covered on the orientation page.

A quick check with a phone magnet before pressing costs nothing. It confirms which face carries the encoder before the part disappears into the knuckle.

CR-V wheel bearing arrangements

Typical CR-V arrangement.
Position Design Press needed
Front Bearing pressed into the knuckle Yes
Rear, front wheel drive Bolt on hub assembly No
Rear, all wheel drive Different part, carries a driveshaft Varies by year

Read the last row carefully. A front wheel drive rear part does not fit an all wheel drive car. The reverse is also true.

A parts counter working from year and trim alone can still hand over the wrong rear hub. Confirm drivetrain from the car itself, not the paperwork.

Diagnosing a CR-V wheel bearing

  1. Confirm drivetrain and corner, since both change the part and the price.
  2. Rock the wheel at twelve and six with it raised.
  3. Weave at road speed to see whether the noise follows load to one side.
  4. Coast in neutral for a rear noise, to separate the driveline from the wheel.
  5. Rule out the tires before buying anything.

Full walkthroughs are on the checking page and the tire noise page. Comparing the cost of each corner is on the front versus rear page.

A worn tire and a worn bearing can sound close enough to fool a careful ear. Ruling out the cheaper cause first avoids paying twice.

CR-V wheel bearing part numbers

The front resolves through 2011 and the rear resolves furthest on all wheel drive cars. Two positions run out before the demanded span does, and both are named in the table below.

Front stops resolving after 2011. The front wheel drive rear stops after 2016. All wheel drive rear reaches 2019.

Every model year this chart resolves: 1997, 1998, 1999, 2000, 2001, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018 and 2019. A 2012 or newer front, and a 2017 to 2019 front wheel drive rear, sit past the catalogs and go by the old part or the VIN.

The front and one rear position stop early

Front CR-V hubs stop appearing in the catalogs checked here after 2011. A CR-V front for 2012 or newer matches by the old part or the VIN.

The front wheel drive rear follows the same pattern after 2016. The all wheel drive rear is the one position documented through 2019, so confirm drivetrain before assuming a gap applies.

The 1997 to 2001 rear splits by left and right corner rather than by drivetrain. That pattern reverses for 2007 onward, where the rear instead splits by front wheel drive or all wheel drive rather than by side.

The front carries a similar quirk for 2007 to 2011, where two numbers print against the same years with no separating qualifier between them. Match the number stamped on the old part rather than guessing which listing applies.

The 1997 front also splits by source. One catalog lists it only under a four wheel drive table starting at 1997, with the two wheel drive table starting a year later at 1998.

A second catalog lists 1997 to 2001 without that split for either drivetrain. Match by drivetrain and confirm against the old part rather than assuming one source over the other.

Matching a stamped number against any of these listings runs through the cross reference page. That check settles more disputes than guessing from the model year alone.

Common questions

Is a CR-V wheel bearing a press job?

At the front yes. The front wheel drive rear bolts on, and the all wheel drive rear carries a driveshaft instead.

Does all wheel drive change the rear part?

Yes. The rear then carries a driveshaft, so the hub and its fasteners differ from the front wheel drive version.

What is the hardest part of the front job?

The circlip in the knuckle. On an older car it corrodes into its groove and resists most pullers.

Why did the ABS light come on after a repair?

Usually the bearing went in backwards. The encoder face must point inward toward the sensor.

Is a recent CR-V front documented?

Not past 2011 in the catalogs checked for this page. Match the old part or the VIN for a newer front.

About this page

Wheel Bearing Editorial Team The Wheel Bearing Editorial Team researches, builds and edits wheelbearing.net. Every part number on the site is transcribed from manufacturer and distributor catalogs (Moog, Timken, SKF, National, BCA/NTN) rather than generated, and every vehicle page is checked against the catalog rows before it goes live. When two catalogs disagree, the page shows both readings and tells you to match the old part or the VIN. More about how this site is built.
